Wednesday, January 13, 2010 Karachi No stranger to controversy, Pakistani film actress Meera again hit the headlines on Tuesday when she was detained by the officials at the Jinnah International Airport for carrying two passports. Meera, who arrived in Karachi from New York in the afternoon via an Emirates Airlines flight EK-606, was stopped at the immigration when the computer record showed that her passport was listed as stolen, said Dr Mushtaq Deputy Director Immigration. “We confiscated both the passports while Meera was allowed to leave since there is no criminal case registered against her,” he told The News. “Now she would have to clarify her position to the Director General Passport and Immigration Office in Islamabad to get them back.” One of the passports issued in 2006 carries the validity period up to 2011, he said. “She obtained a duplicate passport in 2008 after reporting that her first one was stolen. The new passport is issued after a formal application is submitted accompanied by an FIR.” Meera had used the new passport to go to USA but on her return she presented the old one to the immigration officer at the airport, he said. “It is a violation of rules to keep two valid passports.” He said that it was a matter of routine for the immigration department to detect two to three such cases on daily basis. “Some of them have to be arrested because they have cases against them. But most of these people are simply stupid. Now if you ask me why a famous actress was carrying two passports, I’ll say it could be anything but a stupid mistake!”
